Why Strong Towns?

Ivins Inspired & Strong Towns

Ivins Inspired is a proud member of the Strong Towns WashCo coalition. As part of this nationwide network of Local Conversations, our Washington County team advocates for a model of development that makes our city financially resilient and people-oriented.

The Strong Towns Approach

We believe that Ivins grows stronger when we focus on substantive, incremental, and community-driven change. Instead of relying on massive, high-risk projects, we follow a simple Public Investment Process:

  1. Observe where people in Ivins are struggling to navigate their daily lives.
  2. Identify the smallest thing we can do right now to address that struggle.
  3. Act on it immediately.
  4. Repeat.

Putting Ideas into Action

By being part of the Strong Towns coalition, we bring proven strategies to our backyard, such as:

  • Safety in Art: Our Ivins-specific crosswalk projects that use public art to slow traffic and protect pedestrians.
  • Neighborhood Walks: Collaborative tours of our streets to identify simple ways to improve walkability.
  • Kind Collaboration: A commitment to non-partisan, respectful dialogue that builds common ground among all residents.

Think of it like a community trail: We don't wait years for a massive highway budget. We find the muddy patches in our town and fix them today, ensuring our path forward is durable, useful, and built to last for generations.

Building Strong Towns in Washington County: A Conversation with Chuck Marohn

Why are so many towns finding themselves in financial decline despite decades of "growth"? Our roads are deteriorating, debts are climbing, and conventional solutions often seem to fall short. This isn’t just a budgetary issue—it’s about the fate of the communities we love and ensuring a resilient future for everyone who lives here.

Join us for a morning session with Charles "Chuck" Marohn, the founder and president of Strong Towns, as he shares a revolutionary, bottom-up approach to rebuilding local prosperity. A professional engineer and land use planner with decades of experience, Marohn has been named one of the "10 Most Influential Urbanists of All Time" by Planetizen. He is the author of several defining works, including Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity and his latest release, Escaping the Housing Trap.

In this presentation, Marohn will explain in plain language how we can shift our focus toward enduring stability. Key topics include:

  • The Power of "Little Bets": How small, incremental investments can strengthen a community more effectively than massive, debt-driven projects.
  • Incremental Housing Development: Why the "next increment" of development—moving from a vacant lot to a duplex, or a house to a small apartment building—is the key to solving the housing crisis and building neighborhood wealth.
  • The Financial Productivity of Neighborhoods: Why older, established areas are often more fiscally sound than "shiny and new" developments.
  • Humble Public Engagement: How listening to the actual needs of residents leads to better insights and stronger neighborhoods.

Come learn how Ivins City and the broader Washington County region can embrace these concepts to foster a stronger, more connected, and more prosperous place to live.
